What is Grounding?

How do we navigate this life, this society, this body, this mind, this heart?  There are many, many theories, philosophies on how to live. I firmly believe we need to experiment for ourselves and see what practices, belief systems, and ways of being actually yield results.

I typically only teach things in my classes that I have personally benefitted from. My life is a laboratory and since my teens I’ve been actively curious about how to live with more inner freedom and less suffering. One of the foundational practices I regularly teach is grounding. Grounding is a way of centering, connecting to the physical, and embracing the present moment. Not only can grounding build a sense of safety, it also can create space to be with difficult emotions.

Recently I was interviewed on the Sacred Wild podcast with Krish Surroy who’s based in the UK.  It was fun to get on and share my story.  This is the second time I’ve been interviewed—I’m getting the hang of being recorded!

In addition to grounding, I talk about both the challenges and fruits of having many healing and spiritual paths.  I’ve practiced hatha yoga, somatic emotional release, kundalini yoga, reiki, earth-based therapies, celtic spirituality, herbal medicine, and Buddhism.  In complete honesty, each of these were very helpful during that moment of my life and I go in waves and cycles still with many of them.  Sometimes I’m doing a lot of meditation.  Other times it’s yoga or nature based practices.

For me the fluidity seems empowering, yet it has been difficult for me at times to really own, accept, even celebrate this about myself—I’m eclectic.  It’s not something that’s likely to change anytime soon.

I think of myself like a bee—going from flower to flower harvesting the nectar and then transforming it into my version of honey.  Fun fact: honey is basically bee spit.

Whatever your tendencies are, it’s a good practice to be kind to yourself on your journey.

Here’s the whole interview :

Let me know if you have any questions!  Also, June 23rd I have a class on Grounding 101! It’s a beautiful opportunity if you want to learn grounding practices for yourself, get feedback, and ask any questions!
